DS1140 – structural documentation, control plans and consulting
DS1140 is the Danish standard for control of load-bearing structures. It sets out the control plan, control report and as-built documentation your project needs, based on its structural class (KK1-KK4). If the documentation is missing, or doesn't match the structural class, the certified structural engineer sends it back. We produce your DS1140 documentation - from control plan to final as-built report - so it gets approved the first time.
DS1140 for your role
Requirements and documentation depend on where you sit in the project. Choose your role to see what matters for you.
What DS1140 is
DS1140 is the Danish standard that sets out how to document control of load-bearing structures - from foundations and reinforcement to joints and load-bearing walls. It ties into the BR18 building regulation and the requirement that a certified structural engineer (statiker) must approve your structural documentation before a building can be signed off.
Without a properly built DS1140 control plan from the start, projects often end up in a cycle of rejected documents and delayed approvals - costing time on site, and time costs money.
Getting started with DS1140
DS1140 documentation covers three parts, and we help with all three.
Control plan (kontrolplan) - the document that sets out which checks you need to carry out, how often, and who is responsible. This includes the B2 control plan, the B3 control report and A5 as-built documentation.
See how we build your control plan.Self-inspection (egenkontrol) - the ongoing checks the contractor carries out during construction, documented so the certified structural engineer can follow along.
See how self-inspection should be documented.Independent control (uafhængig kontrol) - required when your structural class calls for control by a person who did not carry out the work being checked – supplemented by third-party control in structural class 4.
See how independent control works. The structural class for your project
DS1140 requirements depend on whether your building falls under KK1, KK2, KK3 or KK4. The higher the structural class, the more extensive the control requirements - and from KK3 upward, the requirement for independent control increases significantly. If you're unsure which class your project falls under, that's often the first thing that goes wrong in a control plan - and it's also the first thing we clarify when you contact us.
How KS Danmark helps
We've built DS1140 documentation for contractors, developers and trade contractors across Denmark, and we know what the certified structural engineer requires, whatever the structural class. Send us your project material, we build the documentation from control plan through to the as-built report, and you get a case that's ready for approval without unnecessary delays.
Already had a control plan or control report rejected? We review it, correct the points the engineer flagged, and resubmit it for approval.
"Had I known earlier that Kvalitetssikring Danmark ApS did DS1140 for load-bearing structures, I would have saved myself a lot of money and work."
I often get it sent back by the certified structural engineer because I don't "know enough" about SBI271 and DS1140. I got poor feedback and had to start over several times … and it cost a lot of money in resources and frustration.
That's over now. After my conversation with Jack Lynge about a standing agreement, where he delivers everything on the static documentation side and at the same time advises me on challenges during the execution of my contract – I rarely get comments on my documentation. It runs like clockwork.
Last time it was how to handle a couple of deviations from the project material that he helped with.
Now I have no worries anymore. I set aside an amount every time I tender, and once the price and the division of tasks between me and Kvalitetssikring Danmark are agreed, a separate line is added to the tender list that is purely DS1140 static documentation – capitalised at the same time. That way the lines are completely clear from the start if there is ever a disagreement about retentions etc.

What our clients say about DS1140
“We chose to outsource the part of our quality assurance that concerns DS1140, as we previously tried ourselves and spent far too much time on something that could not be approved.”
“We are pleased with the good cooperation on DS1140, and with really good guidance and advice.”
“We use Kvalitetssikring Danmark for everything relating to QA and DS1140, because we always get a good price and we always reach the finish line.”
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a control plan and a control report?
The control plan sets out what needs to be checked before work starts. The control report (B3) documents afterwards that the check was actually carried out.
Which structural class do I need?
It depends on your project's complexity and consequence class. Call us and we'll work it out based on your project.
What does DS1140 documentation cost?
It depends on the size of the project and its structural class. Call us for a concrete quote.
Can you take over a case that's already underway?
Yes. We review the existing material, fix what the engineer rejected, and carry the case forward.
