B2 control plan – the formal control document

The B2 control plan is the specific document required by Denmark's quality assurance order (kvalitetssikringsbekendtgørelsen) before work on load-bearing structures can begin. It must name every control point, state the control type, control level and control scope, and assign responsibility clearly. Missing any one of the three usually gets the B2 document sent back by the structural engineer. We prepare your B2 control plan so it's ready for approval the first time.

What a B2 control plan is

B2 is the formal name for the control plan document under Denmark's quality assurance order - the document that sets out how control of the load-bearing structures will be carried out. It's the document the certified structural engineer works from directly, and it's often where a project stalls if it isn't precise enough.

Our general page on DS1140 control plans gives the overview; here we go into detail on the B2 document itself.

What a B2 control plan needs to include

An approvable B2 document names every individual control point - the specific places in the structure that actually need checking, such as joints, reinforcement, foundations or load-bearing walls.

For each control point, the document must state the control type (how the check is carried out - visual inspection, measurement or calculation check), the control level (how thorough the check needs to be, based on the structural class) and the control scope (how much of the structure is checked, and how often). Responsibility for each check also needs to be clearly assigned.

The reasons B2 documents get rejected

Most rejections come down to one of three things: the control scope doesn't match the structural class, the control points are described too loosely for anyone to actually carry them out, or responsibility isn't clearly assigned. We fix all three whenever we prepare or revise a B2 document.

How KS Danmark helps

We prepare B2 control plans from scratch, or fix up an existing draft, based on your project material and structural class. If a B2 document has already been rejected, we go through the engineer's comments point by point and resubmit it for approval.
