Independent control under DS1140
Independent control is the check on your load-bearing structures that must be carried out by a person who did not take part in the work being checked - as opposed to self-inspection, which you handle yourselves. The requirement applies from a certain structural class upward, and increases the higher your building's class. We match you with an independent inspector in your region who knows the DS1140 requirements and can step in at short notice.
What independent control is
Independent control is control carried out by a person who did not take part in designing or executing the work being checked. In structural classes 2 and 3 the controller may be employed by the same company; structural class 4 additionally requires third-party control with no financial or organisational ties to the companies involved (BR18 §§ 526 and 526 a). That's the difference from self-inspection, which the contractor carries out continuously - independent control checks whether the self-inspection can stand on its own, or whether an extra set of eyes is needed.
The requirement for independent control isn't the same for every project. It depends on the structural class (KK1-KK4), and from a certain class upward, it's no longer optional.
When independent control is required
The higher the structural class, the greater the requirement for independent control - from spot-checks at lower classes to full, systematic independent control at the highest classes. If you're unsure which class your project falls under, that's often what determines whether you need an independent inspector at all.
Finding an independent inspector
We match you with an independent inspector in your region who knows the DS1140 requirements and can get up to speed on your project quickly - whether that's at the start of a new build, or because an ongoing project is missing the independent control it should have had from the start.
The option to work as an independent inspector yourself
We work continuously with independent inspectors and consultants across Denmark who take on assignments as an independent-control partner for KS Danmark. Get in touch if that's relevant to you.

What's the difference between independent control and self-inspection?
Self-inspection is carried out by you continuously. Independent control is carried out by a person who did not take part in the work being checked – in structural classes 2 and 3 this can be a colleague in the same company.
Is independent control always required?
No, the requirement depends on the project's structural class. We can clarify whether it applies to your project.
How quickly can you provide an inspector?
It depends on your region and the scope of the project. Fill in the form and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Can you help if independent control is missing partway through a project?
Yes, we can step into an ongoing project and establish the independent control that's missing.
